79% of users read websites this way.

In a few seconds - a glance or three - users evaluate websites following an F pattern.

eye-tracking patterns on websites

1st Glance: Users read across the top in a horizontal line.
2nd Glance: Users read across in another horizontal line, looking for headers and highlighted words.
Final Glance: Users take a vertical glance of the left side of a website.

You can make your website more effective by:

  • Realizing users won't read your content thoroughly.
  • Putting all your important information in the first paragraph.
  • Start subheads, paragraphs and bullet heads with information words.
  • By putting your logo in the top left hand corner of a webpage you guarantee that the majority of people will glance at it twice, more than at any other content on your website.
